The safety net and hammock metaphors pack a complex worldview into a single image. But they are nonetheless still superficial metaphors that rely on much deeper and less obvious metaphors for their power. Those deeper metaphors are the ones we have already explored: Moral Strength, Moral Bounds, Moral Nurturance, Moral Empathy, The Nation-as-Family. It is the deep metaphorical moral systems underlying liberal and conservative values that the safety net and hammock metaphors are tapping into. It is that deeper metaphorical system that must be understood.

George Lakoff is professor of cognitive sciences at the University of California at Berkeley. His publications include Women, Fire, and Dangerous Things: What Categories Reveal About the Mind (Univ. of Chicago Press, 1987), and, with Mark Johnson, Metaphors We Live By (1980) and More Than Cool Reason: A Field Guide to Poetic Metaphor (1989).

All of this leads me back to the importance of teaching students to understand their strengths. Strengths, rather than boarding passes or internship IDs, allow students to explain the “impact” something had on them. Using or developing a strength you know you have, or finding a new one, is a makes an essay a much more compelling story than a description of your itinerary or the highlights of all the events you attended during your internship. Even better, strengths manifest themselves all the time in all kinds of ways. A relationship with a family member, a scary test, a funny and or/embarrassing story with a friend has as much potential for a great essay as a trip to Nepal.
